Static or dynamic IP?

Every computer connected to the network has its own unique or not so unique identifier on the Internet, with which other computers can access it and respond to its requests. If there was no such address, how could the network determine which message was intended for which computer? Logically every computer should have a unique address, but the technologies developed, the number of devices increased rapidly and the free addresses began to be insufficient.

When the Internet was just beginning, each computer or server had a static IP address. This address was given to computer at first connection to network by ISP, and then it was registered in computer settings and never changed even during reboots. When addresses became scarce, several technologies were invented to solve the problem. Static addresses now cost money and are mostly used only for servers.

When a computer sends a request to the server, the server replaces the send port with its own value and remembers that the responses on this port should be sent to such a computer from the local network. When it receives a reply, the server simply changes the port to what it was before the change, takes the computer’s local address from memory on the port, and sends it a message. But if another computer decides to contact yours externally and sends the request first, you get a problem, the server won’t know which of several hundred computers it is addressing to and nothing will work.

Is this bad for normal users? I think not. I think it’s even better. When you have a static IP, you are very easy to get to. Your IP address is recorded everywhere, so you’re easy to identify. In addition there are plenty of bots on the net trying to brute force passwords to ssh, ftp and other services, exploit vulnerabilities, and so on. For example, run Apache on port 80 and try to connect to your external ip. If authentication appears instead of the expected Apache start page or there is some kind of error, then it is NAT. If your page opens – the IP is probably dynamic. You can see if it changes on reboots. But if you have not bought a static IP separately, then it is mostly dynamic. As for choosing the IP address for your home local network, things are a bit different.
