The leading types of proxies are:

  • FTP – uploading data to FTP servers;
  • CGI – opening any website directly in your browser;
  • SMTP, POP3 and IMAP – work with e-mail;
  • HTTP and HTTPS – Web browsing;
  • Socks – transfer all data to the target server.

For effective and secure work on the network, it is recommended to use HTTP, HTTPS and Socks. They are the most acceptable and safe for this kind of activity.

Characteristics of an HTTP proxy

The main task of the most common type of proxy is the correct organization of the quality work of browsers that use the TCP protocol.

This type of proxy guarantees:

  • caching of downloaded files;
  • limiting access to certain types of resources;
  • data filtering;
  • connection speed limit;
  • logging, traffic control.

Types of HTTP proxies by anonymity:

Transparent: are used to pass the user’s IP in HTTP headers. They’re not safe to use because they don’t give absolute anonymity;
Anonymous: they tell a proxy to use, hiding the real IP address. Doesn’t provide complete anonymity. The reason is the existence of proxy information;
elite: do not inform about the proxy usage and don’t show the IP, they guarantee the complete anonymity.

Properties of HTTPS

HTTPS is an analogue of HTTP. Additional letter “S” defines the concept of “secure” (secure). The difference is the strong support of a secure SSL connection.

Proxies are used for transmitting secret information. Important: when using this type, transmitted information can be intercepted. HTTPS-protocol is used to increase the security level of personal data. All traffic is encrypted with a tamper-resistant algorithm.

Advantages of Socks

Socks is the most effective way to transfer information transparently, unnoticed by both the client and the server.

There are two main types:

  • Socks 4 – to maintain a TCP connection;
  • Socks 5 – for authorization, remote DNS-request.

Socks do not moderate HTTP-headers, transmit accurate information, excluding information about the IP-address. Maximum anonymity.

If you are involved in SMM, you will also need to know which proxies are best suited for promotion in VK: ipv4 or ipv6.

How to determine proxy type

There are two ways to determine the type of proxy:

  • Software.
  • Manual.

If you choose the first, the right solution is to use Proxy Helper, Checker type proxy. The second way is to learn to tell the difference between proxy types visually.

Information about the type of proxy is very important. It determines the quality and safety of your further work on the network.

To find out what type of proxy is working at the moment, you can see in its properties the number of the active open ports: For HTTP proxies, 80, 81, 8080 or 3128. For SOCKS it is 1080 or 1081. For FTP proxy it is usually port 21, but you will not be able to connect to an FTP server without an FTP client. CGI proxy is a web page, that is, there is no port number when working with it.

It is very important that you do not forget that here are the default port numbers open, because when you tamper with the server (at the level of an advanced user) port numbers can be changed.
