Ensuring your own safety online is an urgent task for users who want to protect themselves from intruders and leakage of confidential data. One of the easiest and most affordable security options for ordinary users is hiding their IP addresses.
This can be accomplished in the following way:
- you can use SOCKS5 server to substitute your IP-address for the IP-address of a proxy-server located in another city or even in another country;
- Besides swapping the IP address, you can use VPN (virtual private network) and RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) to increase anonymity and prevent unintentional leakage of your IP address by third-party applications or browsers that are not set up to redirect traffic through the SOCKS proxy.
In most cases it’s enough to use only SOCKS-proxy (you can get access to SOCKS-proxy at 5socks.net) and you don’t need to spend your time and effort for rather complicated setting up RDP and VPN. However, in this case you should make sure that you have properly configured your browsers for work through the SOCKS-proxy, and they in no way compromise your real IP-address.
You can use the web service ipleak.com to check if your IP address has been spoofed correctly. To do this, simply open the browser you use to work anonymously on the Internet and open the web page www.ipleak.com.
The page that opens gives you detailed information about your IP address, the location of the server to which the IP address is assigned and a lot of other useful information. If you see the IP address of the selected SOCKS proxy, and the server location is different from your current location – you are protected and can safely use the browser for anonymous surfing on the Internet.
